Position Description

College for Creative Studies (CCS) is seeking a dynamic, energetic, and experienced individual to join the Art Education Department. We invite applications for a full time Lecturer appointment to commence Fall of 2024. This is primarily a teaching position with some administrative responsibilities. The Department of Art Education seeks a colleague to enhance and advance the Department's record of innovation, someone with administrative and leadership experience, committed to playing an active role in supporting innovative art and design education in urban public schools and arts education initiatives throughout the Detroit area, and the state.

 

We are seeking a visionary and collaborative art educator to teach courses in art education, collaborate with the regional art education community, design and supervise field placements in schools, advise and inspire students. One of the important expectations is to become an ambassador and lead collaborative efforts with public schools and enhance the relationship with the department and the community. Based in the heart of Detroit, CCS is a global leader in art and design education, with world class technical facilities, studio spaces and faculty. 

 

THE PROGRAM:

CCS offers a Teacher Certification Program for undergraduate BFA students, a Post Baccalaureate for professionals who wish to earn teaching certification, and is launching a 30-credit low residency MA degree. 

 

The Art Education program at CCS combines an internationally recognized BFA degree with dynamic and innovative teacher preparation courses. In keeping with the CCS mission of producing the finest artists in their respective fields, the Art Education Department prepares teacher candidates to be leaders in diverse educational communities and beyond through a rigorous professional program in content and pedagogy that fosters a love of teaching and learning, understanding of learner-centered needs, and mastery of studio/classroom best practices. 

 

Nurturing an ethic of excellence, the Graduate Art Education program at CCS embraces collaborative endeavors while fostering response/ability to a community of diverse learners. The MA in Art Education cultivates advanced pedagogy skills, visionary artistry, and rigorous action research methodologies to equip practicing professionals in art education with tools to meet the needs of global 21st century learners and become leaders in the field.

 

Position Accountabilities and Essential Functions  

Reporting to the Chair of Art Education, the successful candidate will:

  • Teach six courses a year, inclusive of online, face to face, undergraduate art education courses and other courses as assigned
  • Administratively:
    • Serve as certification officer and field placement coordinator determining all field placements for courses and for student teachers. 
  • Maintain and/or establish formal relationships with school district Human Resource departments for student teaching. 
  • Support the full-time faculty with data from MDE for reports 
  • Complete data reports and oversee surveys from MDE 
  • CPAST monitoring and reporting
  • Play a supportive role in curriculum development and updates, 
  • Support strategies for retention in the program
  • Work collaboratively with Continuing Education to develop experiential opportunities for K12 Art Educators
  • Attend open houses and support recruitment

Qualifications and Experience

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree is preferred, BFA with extensive experience will be considered
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful art teaching experience in the K-12 US school system (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity in art and design education
  • Command of contemporary theoretical and pedagogical practices in art and design teaching and learning, especially for children and youth.
  • Experience with practicum and clinical teaching supervision or equivalent supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with state standards governing teacher education program approval and teacher licensure
  • Ability to work supportively with students, faculty, staff, clinical educators and alumni in the maintenance and development of a professional learning community
  • Confident communication skills, with proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multiple years full-time teaching art or design in an urban public school, with appropriate certification
  • Experience in art education teacher education at the college level.
  • Evidence of involvement in innovative program/curriculum design
  • Experience working in a range of learning sites, i.e., college, school, museum, community
  • Interest and/or experience teaching/working within studio areas that exist and/or complement the needs of the department
  • Demonstrated experience in the integration of new media technology in the teaching and learning environment

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: This job operates in a professional office and college campus environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to maintain a stationary position, use a computer and other office equipment, and communicate effectively in person, by phone, and virtually. Frequent interaction with others, including staff, faculty, students and third parties is required. The employee may occasionally be required to move files or other objects weighing up to 25 pounds, including from low and high places. The ability to move around within the office and between buildings on campus, attend off-site meetings and events, and travel between Ford Campus site to Taubman Center site are required. CCS will make reasonable accommodations that will allow individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

As a supervisor, travel to schools will require appropriate transportation.
